Ignition Interlock System | Explained!

The ignition interlock system is a device that’s installed in your car, truck or another vehicle. It monitors the driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC) while they’re driving and only allows them to start the vehicle if it’s below 0.02%. This means that even if you’ve been drinking before getting behind the wheel, you won’t be able to start your car until it’s time to go home or elsewhere where alcohol isn’t an issue.

How it works

ignition interlock systemThe device is wired to the vehicle’s ignition, and when it detects that a driver has alcohol in their system, it will demand an alcohol-free breath sample from that driver. This can happen at any time while the vehicle is operating (even while driving). The device will also demand samples at random times while the vehicle is operating.

In order to have an ignition interlock system installed in your vehicle, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have a valid driver’s license and vehicle registration. If you do not have either of these things, they will be required before installing an interlock device on your car.
  • The vehicle must be capable of having an ignition interlock device installed (e.g., all cars manufactured since 1996). If it isn’t, then this program cannot work with your car! This means that if something happens and someone else gets hurt because their car wasn’t equipped properly, then you could be liable for damages caused by them as well as any legal fees incurred by accident victims’ lawyers who might sue over their injuries due to improper installation procedures performed by negligent repairmen who were working under pressure from customers seeking quick results after receiving terrible service from other shops nearby who were unable and willing (but unable) to fix certain problems quickly enough before moving onto another job where they would encounter similar issues again later down the road without having learned any lessons the properly first time around…

ignition interlock systemThe Ignition Interlock system is a great way to keep your driving privileges in check. If you’re on probation or have an ignition interlock device installed on your car, then it’s important that you understand what these restrictions are.

  • No drinking while driving: This is one of the most common restrictions people get when they install an ignition interlock system on their cars. If you want to drive with this restriction in place, it means that if there’s alcohol inside your bloodstream (from drinking), then none of it can be released into the air or onto anything else while driving.
  • No driving with an open container of alcohol in the car: This means no carrying any type of drinkable beverage within reach while operating a motor vehicle—even if those drinks are in containers smaller than 50ml.

Interlock when required

If you have an ignition interlock system, it’s important that the device is installed and active at all times. This means that you must be able to start your vehicle without having any alcohol in your blood. If you attempt to drive with alcohol in your system, the interlock will prevent the engine from turning over.

If you’re required by law to use an ignition interlock device for any reason (including driving on a road trip), it must be activated before starting up your car or truck. Additionally, if there are other drivers around who need their own test results taken before they can drive again or get into another vehicle with them then they too must do this regularly as well!

The purpose of an interlock device

ignition interlock systemmmThe purpose of an interlock device is to prevent drunk driving. It does this by requiring a breath sample before starting the vehicle, and it also requires breath samples at random times while the vehicle is operating.

The interlock device contains an algorithm that detects alcohol in your system based on how long it takes for you to exhale into it, as well as other factors like body temperature and rate of breathing. If there’s any detectable amount of alcohol present in your system, then you won’t be able to start your car until after 15 minutes have passed since last taking a reading from your breathalyzer (or “breathalyzer”).

A number of requirements and restrictions must be followed to operate a vehicle equipped with an ignition interlock system.
