The Safer cars for India campaign have once again tested the safety worth of another MUV, this time the Kia Carens. Before we go into the details, the meat of the matter is that the vehicle has attained an overall score of 3 starts, both for the child as well as adult protection. The GNCAP tested out the base version of the new MUV. For those unaware, the Carens base variant is topped with ESC, ABS with EBD, all-wheel disc brakes, TPMS and 6 Airbags.

Despite all the goodies, the vehicle managed 9.30 points out of a total of 17 in the adult occupant protection category. The reason for this according to GNCAP is that the footwell and platform area of the car was found to be unstable, while the body shell wasn’t capable of “withstanding further load”. While the head and neck protection of the test dummies was good, the driver’s chest protection was mere marginal, and so was the knee protection.

In terms of child protection, the Kia Carens bagged 30.99 points out of 49. While both the child restraint systems, as well as the ISOFIX mounting, were well marked, the vehicle offered to limit protection to 3-Yo dummies placed in forward-facing seats. The protection for the 1.5-year dummy was also marked good.

So that was the Carens 3-star rating. Stay pinned to the GoMechanic Blog for everything automotive.
