4th October 2020, the date when the Indian carmaker Mahindra re-launched an iconic vehicle, Thar. In October 2020, Mahindra Thar was given an overhaul, making it a more powerful and better city driving vehicle. Well, the long booking period tells a lot about the vehicle’s demand. That said, the one thing Thar currently suffers from is the lack of rear-seat comfort. To address the space, Mahindra plans to launch a new 5-door avatar of the current 3-door off-roader. The question arises: What will be the differences between the 3-door and the 5-door versions of the Mahindra Thar? Let’s have a detailed look.
-
Engine and Transmission
Under the hood, the 3-door version currently offers a couple of powertrains. We expect the same to power the 5-door avatar: a 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol engine and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel motor. The petrol mill is capable of generating 150bhp, and the diesel motor developes 130 bhp. However, the torque figures for both engines stand identical at 300Nm but the petrol’s peak torque comes at a lower 1250rpm whereas for the diesel at 1600rpm.
Both the engines right now come mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. The same is expected to do the duties in the 5-door version.

Dimensions
If you are not aware of the fact that the Mahindra Thar measures under 4-metres in length. Well, this should not be the case with the upcoming 5-door Thar. The new 5-door iteration will possibly be a longer vehicle with an increased wheelbase. This would drastically improve the cabin space and also make way for the two extra doors over the current 3-door model. However, the overall width of the 5-door will remain similar to the 3-door version.

Aesthetics, Inside and outside
Like the 3 door version, the new upcoming 5-door Mahindra Thar is expected to come in two models, a hard-top and also a soft-top convertible. But going by the sales figures, the hard-top is the one that is selling big. Coming back to the aesthetics, we expect the 5-door Mahindra to look exactly the same as the current model from the front and the back. The side profile will get a slightly different look and feel, all because of the addition of rear seat doors.
The rear seats are a particular concern as it is a lot difficult for many to enter and exit the vehicle. the rear door will make the ingress and egress a lot easier. The same is the case with the interior too. Both the versions will share the interior and the creature comfort both offers.
Burning Question Can The Force Gurkha Take On The Mahindra Thar?
We expect Mahindra to launch the 5-door iteration of Thar either by the end of 2022 or in the first quarter of 2023. Also, people should be ready to pay about 70,000 to 1.3 lakhs more for the 5-door version.
