Maruti Suzuki Jimny or the globally known Suzuki Jimny is all set to make a debut in the Indian market. It was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020. When it comes to the rivals it will be facing in India, the only name which comes to the mind is Mahindra Thar. Although the Mahindra Thar had to be discontinued due to the BNVSAP norms, the company is going to launch a new version soon. So let us compare both of the SUVs on the basis of a few parameters and then decide which one is better.

Mahindra Thar clearly has a lead over the Jimny although both the SUVs are to yet launched and the official figures are yet to come. But with what is clear, Mahindra Thar has got a powerful engine that produces over 90hp of more power and 100Nm of extra torque when compared to the Jimny. That being said, Maruti Suzuki Jimny will surely have a better fuel economy, but this is not a big deal when offroaders are being compared. So at the powertrain front, the score is:

These figures are the ones available for the current generation of both the vehicles. The upcoming models are expected to have the same credentials too. Maruti Jimny takes a slight lead here in terms of ground clearance and departure angle. Mahindra Thar has got a better approach angle though.

Safety Features
Although Maruti has been known to give very few safety features in its car, Suzuki globally gives a plethora of features in the Jimny. We can expect that few of them will be carried onto the Indian spec Jimny too. It will be a premium offering through the NEXA channel of Maruti. You can expect the Jimny to get dual airbags at the front, ABS with EBD, ESP, Traction Control (TC), Hill launch and descent assist and Suzuki’s advanced 4X4 tech called the AllGrip system.
On the other hand, the all-new second-gen Thar has become much safer compared to the previous-gen as the new safety list on the new Thar will include disc brakes on all four wheels, front airbags, ABS with EBD, parking camera, rear parking sensors, front seatbelt reminder, and a high-speed alert system.

Features
What all will the SUVs offer on the features front? LEt’s find out.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny can be expected to get a massive touchscreen infotainment system compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additional features on the Jimny include the LED projector headlamps, electric ORVM’s with turn indicators and many more.
On the other hand, Mahindra Thar will have a touchscreen infotainment system too. You can expect the new generation Thar to get cruise control. But Thar as always seems to lack behind in the list of features.

Which off-roader is better? Let us first do the maths. Jimny has scored a total of 14 out of 20 points. On the other hand, Thar has scored 12 points out of 20. So clearly Jimny is a few points ahead of the Thar. But what about the price? Both the SUVs are expected to be launched with a price tag touching ₹10 lakhs. If you are looking for raw power, Thar is a for sure SUV you need to select but do keep in mind that it lacks features as compared to the Jimny.
