MG7, Can this be the Verna Killer?

The sedan segment in India has been falling behind. Hyundai launched its sportier 2023 Verna and aims to capture a significant share. Till now MG only has SUVs and one little EV in their lineup. Can their MG7 be the game-changer and overtake Verna?

MG7 Rain House

It is the brand’s most extensive sedan, targeting young enthusiast buyers. It was revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year and launched in China later on. Let’s see what the car offers:

Design

The MG7 has a futuristic and sporty design, with the front fascia comprising a large grille with air intakes on each side of the bumper. It has a sloped bonnet with triangular headlamps. One might say it is similar to the Verna in terms of design. In terms of dimensions, the size is almost the same as a Toyota Camry.

It has sleek and aerodynamic cuts with a continuous taillight that goes through the trunk and to the fenders at the rear. The prominent part of the rear would be the four exhaust pipes, adding a solid sporty element along with an active spoiler.

Powertrain

The MG7 is offered with two turbocharged engines. The first is a 2.0-litre petrol engine 2A4E churning out 261hp & 405Nm torque mated to a 9-speed AT. The other engine on offer is a 1.5-litre 15FDE engine making 188hp & 300Nm torque mated to a 7-speed DCT.

The 0-100km/h time is about 6.5 seconds. While these specs are for the Chinese version, the Indian version might have different engines or a single engine on offer in a different tuning stage. There is also word about a hybrid powertrain coming soon.

Interior and Features

Inside the cabin, it has two screens, with the instrument panel having a diameter of 10.25 inches and a 12.3-inch main screen. The screens have capacitive touch buttons below them for climate control and other features. The interior is available in black, green, and red, with the red color exclusive to the top variants.

The MG7 has a D-shaped steering wheel with three spokes and a center console equipped with a monostable gear selector, cupholders, and a wireless charging pad. It also has a start/stop button and a practical and spacious compartment under the armrest.

This sedan has a fastback design, a luxurious interior, and a Bose Centerpoint Deep Sea surround sound system to enhance the experience. It features the intelligent cockpit of Banma Loushen 8155. Can this take over the Verna? What do you think?
