7 Most Beautiful Hatchbacks Of The 2000s Era

A long time ago, when people were just getting used to different manufacturers bringing in different models, a particular segment got a very strong foothold and zoomed past the other segments so much so, that those sales figures could not be achieved by the other segments even to this date. SUVs might be making all the right noises now but the ultimate symphony always belongs to hatchbacks for a very long time and the sales charts are definitive proof. Here we speak about the 7 most beautiful hatchbacks of the 2000s, which can be described as the Golden Age of Automobiles in India.

  1. Daewoo Matiz

This car from Daewoo was way ahead of its time and many hatchbacks even now can be seen with almost a similar design, and this is a car that was launched 21 years back. The design was classified as “cute” and was an instant hit. Its dashboard layout was designed neatly, it had spacious interiors, and a peppy 800cc engine churning out 52hp and 71 Nm of power and torque respectively. However, poor after-sales service from Daewoo and tough competition from manufacturers’ products like Tata Indica, Maruti Suzuki 800 and Hyundai Santro led to its downfall. This can easily be referred to as one of the most beautiful hatchbacks of the 2000s.

  2. Fiat Palio

This product from Fiat is undoubtedly a “Masterpiece” and it was one of the most fun-to-drive peppy hatchbacks. It came with a variety of engine options starting from a 1.2 Litre Naturally Aspirated Petrol engine, a 1.3 Litre Multijet Oil burner and a 1.6 Litre Turbo Petrol engine. Particularly, the 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine with a 100hp was a hoot to drive and it had the handling dynamics to back it up as well. It was a heavy car as it came fully loaded with features and electronics. It was given a design update and re-launched as Palio Stile but still failed to impress the Indian market, which is quite sad considering the package it came with. Nevertheless, it always will be one of the most beautiful hatchbacks of the 2000s.

  3. Hyundai Santro

The Hyundai Santro is the car that put Hyundai on India’s map and with this product, Hyundai hit the ball right out of the park. The Santro became an instant hit and everybody wanted to buy one. It soon gave the famous Maruti 800 a run for its money and that is not a joke at all. It initially came with a 1.0-litre petrol unit, which was peppy and fuel-efficient. The Santro was the car that introduced the “tallboy” design to hatchbacks making it even more spacious and different from its competition for which the Indians went crazy. This made Hyundai rise to the position of the second largest manufacturer in India and the first largest in exporting.

  4. Fiat Uno

Fiat had launched one more product that qualifies to be in the list of beautiful hatchbacks of the 2000s and that is the Fiat Uno. This car was launched as a collaboration with PAL in India and had the potential to be a hit, but poor marketing from Fiat led to a decrease in sales. Although it could fit in the tightest parking spots you can find, it was still capable of seating 5 adults and this was very unique owing to its excellent design. Its build quality was impeccable along with good right quality. Initially, it was launched with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and later introduced a sporty 1.7-litre diesel engine that was quicker than petrol while being fuel-efficient at the same time.

  5. Maruti Suzuki Zen

The Maruti Suzuki Zen is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful hatchbacks of the 2000s and we just wish Maruti Suzuki introduces it without changing a thing. This car has a cult following and many people like us treasure this car even now. People purchase this car and modify it to keep themselves sane because nobody can stay put when they see the list of modifications it can go through and still keep performing better while looking drop-dead gorgeous. It initially came with a 993cc 4-cylinder engine (bigger than the 3-cylinder unit on the 800), that spit out 50 bhp of power mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. This piece of art was attracting our parents when they were young and now doing the same with us.

  6. Hyundai Getz

The Hyundai Getz was the premium hatchback offering from the Hyundai stable and its design was flawless. All the panels were a tight fit, with very less or no gaps between them which made it look very European and this was at a time when there were not many choices in the market. It was introduced with a 1.4-litre petrol engine with a peak power of 82 bhp and 115Nm of torque. This engine was not only peppy but also very frugal with a mileage of 15.6 kmpl. The engine also could be modified to a higher state of tune without affecting its longevity. It is because of this very reason that the Getz even after being discontinued still has a high resale value and many still searches for it, to modify it to their content.

  7. Maruti Suzuki Alto

The final car in the list of the most beautiful hatchbacks of the 2000s and definitely the king of the segment for decades is the Maruti Suzuki Alto. This car can easily be confirmed as India’s favourite car looking at the fact that it was India’s highest-selling car for a record-breaking 16 years and it sold so much later in 2014, that it was the most sold car in the entire world beating the Volkswagen Golf in Germany, Toyota Aqua and Honda Fit in Japan. This hatchback is “The People’s Champion” and almost every household in every corner of our country has bought this car. It was introduced in 2000 with the tried and tested 800cc engine from the Maruti 800 albeit with a 5-speed manual transmission compared to the 4-speed unit on the 800. Just a year later, it was updated with a 1,061cc engine that produces 64 bhp of power and 80 Nm of torque. This unique legacy explains why Maruti Suzuki still is not ready to let go of this car.
