FASTag was mandated a long ago but seems like a lot of people have still not got the RFID Tag for themselves. In a recent calculation report issued by NHAI, they have collected a sum of ₹20 Cr from 18 lakh people who didn’t have FASTags on their cars. The people who didn’t have the RFID tags in their cars and entered the tag lanes we fined with the double toll tax.

When the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway rolled out the electronic toll collection scheme in December 2020 and also extended the deadline to get the FASTag multiple times but seems there are still some people who haven’t got the RFID tag for their cars till now. With multiple reminders to get one and making it free of cost multiple times, people are still commuting without tags.

In order to give hassle-free toll plaza experiences to the FASTag users and make the defaulters realise their mistake, NHAI said that they would be charging double the toll from all the people who pass through the FASTag lanes without having the tag. Following the same, they are continuously charging double toll from the defaulters and have collected ₹20 Cr till now.
We suppose its high time you should get a FASTag for your car. The tag is nothing but an added convenience that will help you reduce the time you spend in the long queues waiting for your turn to pay the toll.
Over 1.55 crore FASTags have been issued through multiple Point of Sale (PoS) locations. NHAI has experienced the high sale of the tags which means that Indians have accepted the system really well but for the ones who haven’t got it yet, guess they are helping NHAI raise some funds!

“Till now, a total number of 18 lakh vehicles defaulted by encroaching FASTag lanes across India has resulted in a double charge cash toll accumulation of about ₹20 crores,” NHAI said.
