BS6 Effect: Volkswagen Ameo And Tiguan Discontinued In India

Volkswagen with some sneaky decisions first discontinued the diesel engines and now two cars, Ameo and Tiguan. Both cars served very little time in the Indian automotive market. Volkswagen Ameo was the first sub-4m sedan from the German manufacturer to rival the top-selling Maruti Suzuki Dzire. On the other hand, the Volkswagen Tiguan was the first premium compact SUV. Let’s have a glimpse of what the cars offered.

Powertrain and Transmission

The compact sedan came with two engine options, diesel and petrol one.

  • The Diesel engine was a 1.5-litre turbo unit which produced about 110ps of power and about 250Nm of torque.
  • On the other front, the petrol engine was a bit low on power as well as the torque. It was a 1.0-litre naturally-aspirated MPI engine which produced 76ps of power and just 95Nm of torque.
  • The transmission options were a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 7-speed DSG automatic.

On the contrary, the SUV came with just one engine and transmission option.

  • The Volkswagen Tiguan came with a 2.0-litre TDI engine producing a healthy 190ps of about and about 320Nm of torque.
  • The turbo diesel engine was mated to a 7-speed DSG transmission to add the right amount of excitement.

Now, What’s Next?

Volkswagen had this in mind throughout as they recently launched the big brother of Tiguan, the Tiguan All-Space. The All-space has grown in size to make it a 7-seater.

  • Like the previous Tiguan this time too Volkswagen offers the Tiguan All-space in just one engine option.
  • But instead of diesel, the car comes with a 2.0-litre TSI motor which produces whooping 190ps of power and healthy 320Nm of torque. Both of which are available in the later stages of the rpm range.

Even though the new Volkswagen Polo comes with the updated 1.0-liter MPI petrol engine, it doesn’t make it to the Indian specific Ameo. On the other hand, the diesel was far discontinued to be re-launched.

Rivals and Pricing

  • It is not so good for the company but the compact sedan was pitched against the likes of the segment-leading Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze, Ford Aspire, and Hyundai Xcent.
  • The more premium Tiguan was in its own league but depending upon the price it rivalled the likes of BMW X1, Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, and Volvo XC40.
  • The Ameo started at ₹5.49 Lakhs and went all the way up to ₹10Lakhs.
  • Volkswagen Tiguan came with the range-topping the Highline variant at around ₹32lakhs (ex-showroom). But the Tiguan All-space fills the gap with just a premium of about ₹1.6lahkhs.
