Some vehicles rule the sales chart. Some rule millions of hearts. While some, rise to become a cult. And talking about cults, we’d be committing a sin if we don’t mention the Mahindra Thar. But have you ever wondered why the Mahindra Thar is an off-roading cult? And what makes the Mahindra Thar one of the most respected SUVs in India. Well, respect isn’t just commanded, it is earned. So here are 6 reasons why the Mahindra Thar is so revered in India.
-
It’s Made in India
Not German, not Japanese, and surely not French. The Mahindra Thar is proudly “Made in India”. And believe it or not, that’s one of the biggest strengths of the Thar. Because the feeling of owning something made locally is definitely beyond words. And this has worked in favour of the Thar for ages. In fact, now that the BS6 Thar is fully produced in India, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the Thar is one of the most robust vehicles ever produced locally.

The Legacy
The Indian automotive sector is one of the fiercest and most competitive markets out there. Vehicles are throned and dethroned every now and then. But what makes the Mahindra Thar special, is its legacy. The roots of the Mahindra Thar can be traced back to 1949 when the CJ3A came out; which underpinned the design of series of Thar that came out after that. Generations have owned and driven the Thar. It is a vehicle that is even passed on to generations, giving the Thar a rich legacy that is woven with priceless memories.
-
It’s Capable
Keeping aside factors that might have an emotional connection. The Mahindra Thar is supremely capable. Period. As an off-roader, the Thar actually has what it takes to take on any kind of turf, be it sand, snow, mud or even shallow waters. The new BS6 2020 Thar comes with several capable off-roading features such as on-demand 4×4 differential, high and low ranges, etc. With an approach angle of 41.8 degrees, departure angle of 36.8 degrees, ramp over angle of 27 degrees angles and water wading depth of 650 mm, the Mahindra Thar is made for adventure and we mean it.
-
It hasn’t just upgraded, it has evolved
Another thing that makes the Thar one of the most respected SUVs in India is the fact that it has truly evolved over time. From having only a diesel burner to not having air condition, the Thar has now evolved to a true-blue SUV. Offered with both a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit and a 2.2-litre diesel unit now, that Thar even offers automatic transmission; something that was never heard of before! If this isn’t evolution, we really don’t know what is.

It’s loaded on the Inside as well
No matter if you are an off-roader or not, if you happen to own a Thar, you’ll probably spend most of your time inside. And this is where the Thar shines again. With equipment like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, electrically operated AC, cruise control, digital MID and IP54 dust and water-resistant interiors, the Thar is sheer comfort (definitely another reason to respect the legend).
-
It’s Safe
Another thing that makes the Mahindra Thar, worthy of all the respect, is its commitment to safety. As a vehicle that has evolved with time, each and every version of the Mahindra Thar did its best to provide overall safety and ruggedness. Staying true to its lineage, the 2020 Mahindra Thar too provides a 4 Star safety and proudly features on the list of GNCAP’s Safer Cars for India campaign.
So these were the 6 reasons why the Thar is so revered in India. If you too have something to add to the list, comment down below. Till then, Stay Pinned!
