10 Worst Rated Indian Cars By Global NCAP | #SaferCarsForIndia

Car safety ratings do not make it at the top of the checklist for an Indian consumer while buying a car.

Since the days when Maruti 800 was launched, the Indian consumers majorly have a tendency to go for showy cars with loads of equipment, features etc while not usually caring about safety.

However, in the past few years, things have taken a turn. The new-gen Indian consumers are now concerned about the safety and crashworthiness rating of a car as well rather than just how good a car looks and how cheap it is.

Tata and Mahindra have been leading the feet with their new cars when it comes to safety. The Tata Nexon and Altroz and Mahindra XUV300 have gained 5-star ratings at the global NCAP tests.

Even as these two Indian companies are setting a benchmark for developing safer cars, many Indian car manufacturers have been lagging behind.

  1. Maruti Suzuki Eeco

    Maruti’s people carrier, the Eeco has been one of the worst performers in the Global NCAP tests consistently. The Maruti Suzuki Eeco scored zero stars in the NCAP crash tests.

    The report concluded that the chest protection for the driver was weak. Moreover, the knees of the driver were prone to impact due to poor design. However, in the child restraints category, the car scored a 2 stars rating.

    The popular Indian SUV, the Mahindra Scorpio didn’t receive a popular result at the Global NCAP ratings. The car scored zero stars in the Global NCAP crash tests. The driver’s chest and head had poor protection while the passenger’s chest got marginal protection rating. The SUV scored zero stars in the Adult Occupancy Protection and zero for Child Restraints category.

  3. Hyundai Eon

    The Hyundai Eon in its standard version didn’t use to receive airbags. The car, when tested at the Global NCAP, scored a poor zero stars in the adult occupation protection category and two stars in the child occupation protection category.

    The test concluded that the protection for the driver’s head and the chest was poor while in case of passenger’s chest, the protection was marginal.

    Celerio’s variant with no airbag scored zero stars in the adult occupancy protection category and one star in child occupant category.

    The Kwid has been one of the most popular cars in the Indian markets due to its practicality, affordability and after-sales services.

    Although, when it comes to safety, the car doesn’t impress a lot. The car with an without airbags scored the same ratings. The car scored a zero star rating in adult occupant protection and two stars in child occupant protection category.

  6. Datsun Go

    The Datsun Go’s no airbags variant scored a zero star rating in the NCAP Global Safety Ratings. The car offered poor protection for the driver’s head due to hard and instant contact with the steering wheel.
    The body of the car was concluded as being unstable. Moreover, the knees of both the occupants were prone to injuries in the case of this car.

  7. Tata Nano

    The Tata Nano has been an entrant in this list for some obvious reasons. The car’s size and height, along with small tyres make the structure unstable. The protection for driver’s neck, chest and head was termed as poor in the tests.
    The car, in a without airbags test scored zero in the adult occupancy protection and child occupancy protection segment.

    India’s favourite car, the Maruti Alto makes it to the list of worst NCAP rated cars. The car, when tested without airbags by the organisation, scored a zero in the crash tests. The protection level for the driver’s head, neck and chest were considered poor.

    On the passenger side, the story gets a bit better. The passenger chest protection was considered adequate and both the occupants at the front could get an impact on the knee.

    The Maruti Swift might have earned a name for itself as a sporty and rugged hatchback. But when it comes to safety, the car isn’t able to impress as much.

    In the NCAP crash tests, the car with no airbags scored zero stars. The protection for the driver and the passenger was rated poor. The chest protection wasn’t up to the mark due to the steering wheel of the car.

  10. Renault Duster

The Renault Duster has been Renault’s show stopper for the Indian car market. However, when it comes to safety ratings, the car doesn’t impress a lot of people.

In the tests conducted, the Renault Duster got zero stars in the no airbags variant. The protection levels ranged somewhere between poor and marginal. The body of the car was termed unstable with no further scope for loading the vehicle.

Safer Cars for India is the need of the hour

The President and CEO of Global NCAP, David Ward was interviewed recently. In the interview, David did acknowledge the fact that the Indian car manufacturers are finally focusing on safety. While manufacturers like Tata and Mahindra have made some amazing progress, there’s still a long way to go.

Global NCAP with its #SAFERCARSFORINDIA campaign aims at urging Indian carmakers to build cars which are safe and durable as well.

Tata and Mahindra seem to have become the flagbearers of safe cars in India. It can only be expected that Maruti and other car manufacturers follow the suit soon. Let’s hope that the Indian cars soon don’t get listed as the worst NCAP rated cars in the future.
