Over 1,500 Mahindra Thar Recalled Over Camshaft Issues

Mahindra launched the new generation Thar in the last quarter of 2020. It’s not so long but the Indian manufacturer Mahindra has recalled some of the vehicles. A key point to note is that this off-roader with a diesel engine is the one that has been recalled.

A Glimpse on The Recall

1,577 units of the 2020 Mahindra Thar has been recalled These are the cars that were manufactured from 7th September 2020 to 25th December 2020.

  • This recall is due to an issue in the camshaft from the supplier’s end.
  • The problem is the faulty machining setting that could have affected some of the engines in that period.
  • Also, the company have contacted many of the Thar owners having the vehicle built during that specific time.
  • Additionally, Mahindra has added that getting the issue solved (if it exists) is voluntary and also complies with the SIAM’s voluntary code on vehicle recalls.

The carmaker concluded that no recall is issued for the petrol variants of the SUV. In the end, this may raise some question on the reliability in the new off-roader. But there is more to it in Thar than a mere recall.

Powering the 2020 Thar are two engines, a petrol and a diesel.

  • Talking about the petrol it is a brand new 2.0-litre turbo petrol (GDI) mStallion engine from Mahindra. It is capable of producing a whopping power of 152ps and the peak torque sits at 320/300Nm for 6-speed AT and MT respectively.
  • On the other hand, under the hood also sits a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that produces 130ps of max power and ultimate torque of 300Nm. Again this engine comes mated to either a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission.
