If Scorpio hadn’t done well, the board of directors would have fired me: Anand Mahindra

Anand Mahindra has always been vocal about the growth of the brand and the sentiment that goes along with it. In one of his recent tweets, he explained how he owes his career to the Mahindra Scorpio, which recently reached the production milestone of 900,000 units in India!

The tweet traces back to the first time he road-tested the Scorpio about twenty years ago before the launch, and it was a massive success across the country. He mentioned how the success of the Mahindra Group depended on the success of this SUV.

At the end of the tweet, he mentioned that if this project had failed, the board of directors would have fired him and highlighted his connection with this SUV. He also stated how this SUV has been the constant, reliable workhorse that has led the brand to new heights.

How was the Scorpio Made?

When Mahindra was developing the Scorpio, they made significant investments in research and development to create a car from scratch. It was Pawan Goenka who conceived and had this idea to make something fresh, he previously worked with General Motors in Detroit in the R&D department.

This project was a risky one; at that time, ₹5.5 lakhs was considered expensive for a Mahindra car, and the company’s success depended on it. The Scorpio performed remarkably in the market, creating new records and inspiring the brand to innovate more.

Celebrating 900,000 Units!

Mahindra also celebrated the production milestone of 900,000 for the Scorpio range, which now comprises two distinct models. It started with a front-engine and RWD and soon introduced four-wheel-drive variants. The design and manufacturing were conceptualized indigenously under the leadership of Anand Mahindra.

With time, the car evolved into the Big Daddy of SUVs, becoming a more premium offering with each update. The first Scorpio came out with a price tag of ₹5.5 lakhs and robust mechanical underpinnings, a solid road presence, and a rugged style. Now that has evolved into Scorpio N, the latest generation launched last year. The older version still has a massive fan following in the smaller towns, so Mahindra continued it as the Scorpio Classic.
