6 Cars In India That Failed Due To Poor Design

Cars, it is said, are a true reflection of a person’s (in this case, the owner’s) personality. However, a car’s exterior appearance can create or shatter the first impression of accurate reflection. One can remark, “jo dikhta hai voi bikta hai,” especially in the Indian automotive sector. This is why car manufacturers pay close attention to the appearance of their vehicles. To get around this, carmakers may sometimes experiment with new designs to stand out from the competition. However, this might soon move to the south. As a result, we’ve identified six cars from India’s automotive sector that have failed owing to poor design.

Note: We are well aware that looks are subjective, so that people may have different opinions about the vehicle. Hence, the cars on the list have a poor design, at least this is what we think.

  1. Maruti Suzuki Zen Estilo

One of the weirdest cars on the list is the Maruti Suzuki Zen Estilo. The car was launched towards the end of 2006 under Maruti’s then-new car marketing strategy. Maruti Suzuki India Limited decided to launch a new vehicle every five years in India; Estilo was one of those. But the Zen was far from what they’ll call successful.

For reference, the Maruti Zen was in the market from 1993, but Estilo’s sales number did not reflect growth. With its not so mainstream and quirky exteriors, the vehicle didn’t appeal to many and didn’t see many customers.

  2. Mahindra Verito Vibe

The Indian carmaker Mahindra is known to have keen interests in chopping off the rear section of its cars; Verito Vibe is among the first to start this trend for the company. If you have been following the Mahindra and its cars, Verito is essentially a facelift of the Logan. Later, Mahindra cut the vehicle’s boot to make it even weirder and called it Verito Vibe.

For instance, even the boot loading cavity seems alarmingly quirky and challenging to fit in more oversized items. The car sure is practical and spacious, but its aesthetics let the vehicle down on the inside. Hence it served for about six years and was discontinued for good later (2013-2016).

  3. Mahindra Quanto

Okay, we think this is the right time to discuss another vehicle that also was a victim of chopped off the boot, Xylo Pro Mini (Mahindra Quanto). Quanto, a capable car with a potent engine and decent equipment list, could have done wonders for the company. But because of too boxy design and resemblance with the fleet car, Xylo made the vehicle less desirable.

  4. Maruti Suzuki A-Star

It was moving back to the car from India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki A-Star. Okay, we’d agree that A-Star would be the least ugly on the list here on this list. But because of the other-worldly design, A-Star never appealed to many customers here in our country. Next, cramped cabin space was also a bummer about this hatchback. Well, this makes the Maruti Suzuki among the least sold cars in the Maruti’s stable.

  5. Sonalika Rhino

Remember the Toyota Qualis, an MPV that was regarded as the OG of cabs in the Indian market? It was phased out to make room for the Toyota Innova, which has since improved and is still going strong. Leaving that aside, this Sonalika was an attempt to resurrect the original Qualis (by just using the exterior design). Also, Sonalika Rhino seems to have the same body structure.

However, the vehicle’s front end and back end were completely redesigned. Next, this rebuild gave the car strange features, and the likeness drew criticism. As a result, it did not sell well and ended up in the Hall of Hate.

  6. Nissan Evalia

If you haven’t guessed before, the Nissan Evalia was an attempt to compete with the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and, of course, the still-king Toyota Innova. People, it seems, are resistant to change. The Nissan Evalia failed to meet expectations in 2015, and the firm abandoned the model in India.

In addition, Ashok Leyland, an Indian heavy commercial vehicle manufacturer, aided Nissan by launching the Stile, a rebadged Evalia. It flopped again, most likely for the same reason.
