2022 saw a lot of new car launches. The VW Virtus, Mahindra Scorpio-N, Grand Vitara, etc. all are excellent additions to the Indian car market. However, as new cars come in, old ones say goodbye. This year, a lot of cars were taken off the roads, for various reasons. Here’s a list of the cars discontinued in 2022!
-
Renault Duster
First up on this list of cars discontinued in 2022 is the Renault Duster. The Duster was launched in India in 2012. It was one of the first cars in the compact SUV segment and primarily competed with the Ford EcoSport. The Duster gathered a big fanbase in India, but it didn’t appeal to the masses. The interior was rather plain, and the car never really got a proper update in the 10 years it was on sale. The Duster was the only car in the segment that offered an AWD system, making it a bit more off-road friendly.

Mahindra Alturas G4
Next up on this list of cars discontinued in 2022 is the mighty Alturas G4. This was one of the true competitors to the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour. It has every feature you would expect in a car worth ~Rs. 35-40 Lakhs. The engine was powerful, the transmission was on point, and as an SUV, it was quite capable off the roads as well. It was much cheaper than the competition and offered a lot more. Despite the excellent value proposition, the Alturas G4 didn’t sell well.
-
Maruti Suzuki S-Cross
With the launch of the Grand Vitara, Maruti decided to pull the plug on the S-Cross in India. The S-Cross was Maruti’s flagship car up until 2022 and had a huge consumer base. It was decently premium, had a punchy 1.5L petrol engine, and got decent features. The 4-Star safety rating also helped this car sell well. The previously discontinued 1.6L diesel engine on the S-Cross was one of the favorites for us enthusiasts. The S-Cross was primarily discontinued to make way for the Grand Vitara.
-
VW Polo
This is the most missed car on this list of cars discontinued in 2022! The VW Polo bid adieu to the Indian market this year as well. The Polo, over the years, gathered a massive fan following and was the best hatchback when it came to build quality, performance, and handling. Even with the smaller 1L petrol, the Polo was supremely fun to drive. The 1.2L TSI engine deserves a special mention here. That, paired with the 7-speed DSG was one of the best combinations in a hatchback.
-
VW Vento
Another VW on this list of cars discontinued in 2022 is the Vento. The sedan was discontinued along with the Polo this year. Just like the Polo, the Vento was very well known for being a top performer. It wasn’t the biggest when compared to the Honda City or Maruti Ciaz, but it was still comfortable inside. Both, the Polo and the Vento gradually went down on the sales charts as the prices increased. These cars too never got a proper update, and the list of features here wasn’t a big one either.
-
Hyundai Santro
Hyundai had recently re-launched the Santro in India, and it was discontinued in just 4 years. Back in the 2000s, the Santro was the king of the market. But what brought the Santro to this list of cars discontinued in 2022? Well, it just didn’t work this time around. Prominent Maruti cars like the WagonR and the Celerio gave the Santro a very tough time and it reflected poorly in sales figures. Considering low sales, Hyundai decided to pull the plug on the Santro in 2022.
-
Hyundai Elantra
The only premium sedan on this list of cars discontinued in 2022 is the Hyundai Elantra. While the Elantra has received a massive update globally, it was removed from Hyundai’s line-up in India. The Elantra primarily competed with the Skoda Octavia and the Hyundai Civic. The Civic was already discontinued in 2020, and the Octavia jumped to a higher segment. The Elantra was the only one remaining here, and it didn’t offer a lot for an Rs. 20+ Lakh car. The engines were not too powerful, and the car looked outdated. The diesel engine specifically was a disappointment here because Hyundai used the same 1.5L engine that we see on the Verna. And this car costs Rs. 10 lakhs more than the Verna! This resulted in low sales, and Hyundai decided to say goodbye to the Elantra.
-
Toyota Urban Cruiser
The last one on this list of cars discontinued in 2022 is the Toyota Urban Cruiser. The Urban Cruiser was Toyota’s version of the Maruti Brezza. As the Brezza went through a major update, Toyota decided to call off from this SUV and focus on the Hyryder. As a car, the Urban Cruiser was a pretty strong product, but people just preferred the Brezza.
Which one of these cars discontinued in 2022 will you miss the most? Let us know in the comments below! For us, it is definitely the VW Polo!
