10 Common Problems Reported on the Tata Nano!

After Tata acquired the JLR, Tata cars not being successful is history. Tata Nano debut in the 2008 auto expo and created a huge hype, ‘People’s Car’. Tata tried the stunt, that no other ever wondered, of providing a car at really affordable rates. But in the end, expectations are deceiving. Tata Nano didn’t do as Tata anticipated. The low cost might be the problem that Tata wanted to solve. Keeping that aside, Tata Nano did transport people at a low cost and with some problems. So, here are 10 common problems reported by owners.

  1. Horn Stopped Working

    Dual Horn Problem
    Horn Problem

The most common problem among them all is the Horn. Before getting into the problem, the Nano’s horn was meek and didn’t offer the punch. Not even the animals on road could hear it. The icing on the cake was a nano driving without a horn which is so common on Indian roads. Many of the owners have reported, after some time, the horn just stops working. The sad part is that a replacement is the only option.

  2. Starter Motor Problem

One of the major components of a vehicle is a starter motor. What if it dies in the middle of nowhere? Yes, Tata Nano was famous for doing so. Some pissed Nano owners reported problems of the starter motor not working. This results in the vehicle failing to start the engine (obviously). The only other option was to push the car on a street and if you stall it again? You’re doomed.

  3. A/C not Effective

Whether the AC is effective or not all depends on how you maintain the car. Well, what if we say even after a proper periodic maintenance some Tata Nanos A/C do not deliver ample cooling. More on the A/C is that people often complain about the plastic toggle switch braking and oh God! that switch brakes really often. Not just that, even the blower on the inside, does not run at its optimum potential.

  4. Power Windows failure

I know the car is cheap and it offers a lot at low prices, but still what’s the point if the vehicle’s second home is the car mechanic’s workshop? Well, Tata Nano is known for power window often failing. Firstly only the front doors come with power windows but they too go kaput at times. Assuming the electricals are not of good quality that they fail.

  5. Speedo Meter not Working

Thankfully Tata Nano comes with a speedo in the centre on the dashboard and is mechanically opperated. That said, it failing is no surprise. The amount of vibration the car has on offer might be the reason for it not working past some time. Though it is easy and cheap fix.

  6. Premature Clutch Wear

Worn out clutch causes low fuel mileage

Everyone knows that Tata Nano was a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive. So, This means that the power is sent to the rear wheels. With that clear, Tata Nano had a common problem of premature clutch wear. What does that mean? well, compared to other cars Nano used to loose its clutch fairly early. So, the things to keep in mind is that, different driving habits also lead to even reduced clutch life.

  7. Dashboard Rattling

At the price you bought a nano, you got just a barebone dash with exposed wiring and bolts. Even then the dash rattles after use of a year or two. This is not a problem to worry about but it surely irritated the occupants on the inside.

  8. Lack Of Power

What more can you expect from a 600cc engine? The small rear-mounted engine did the job just right unless the A/C was turned on. After then the car struggles even for reaching 100kmph.

  9. Less Responsive Power-Steering

    Tata Nano Steering
    Tata Nano Steering

Sometime after Tata Nano’s launch, the carmaker decided to give this small hatch some add on features. This also included power steering. But with its use, the steering got less responsive and lacked feedback. At times the presence of power steering was not even felt.

  10. Poor Ride Quality

This budget hatch had some major problems with the suspensions. Firstly the car on the initial stage offered a fairly soft suspension making it difficult to sit in the car. Nano usually tossed people here and there when cornering (at low speeds). The time too had a huge toll on the suspension as it starts to squeak.

Time is something that takes a toll on everything, cars are no less. Tata Nano does come with some of its flaws, it still is a cute little car or is it? do let us know in the comment section below.

    • Hi Unnikrishnan,
The problems mentioned in the article are sourced from our customer feedback. Indeed Tata Nano is the car that allowed an average Indian to own a vehicle which was Sir Ratan Tata’s dream. We at GoMechanic are no way trying to defame that. Thank You for reading. Happy Motoring! 🙂

  1. I am tata nano user
    There more worse problems
    1. Silender mounting brocken again and again, even garage people are not surprised so common issue.
    2. Last month broken engine mount bracket, engine slide down by a feet.
    3. Clutch is knee killer
    4. All the engine heat comes in the car behind the back seat – if not agree just touch the rear part, absolute design failure.
Also faced some of issues mentioned above article..

AC is not that bad, but struggling beating engine heat in car after an hour ride.

  2. Tata Nano .. my love .. Did not experience none of the 10 common problems in my 2012 BSIV model ..

I parted with my Nano (due to parking problem) with heavy heart

AC Super .. speed no problem .. I could always achieve speed >100 .. the speed alert would activate ..

Singoor to Sanand and a long legal battle might have demoralised the technical team ..

Power stearing and better suspension models right from beginning could have changed the fate.

A very good car not properly marketed.

    • Hi,
Sad to know that you had to part with your Nano. The Tata Nano enabled an average Indian to own and drive a car which was Sir Ratan Tata’s dream and in no way we trying to defame that. All the data in the article have been sourced from our customer database. Thank You for reading. Happy Motoring! 🙂

    • Even I am using Tata Nano 2012 model. I didn’t get a single problem. I only change oil every time. Even in other cars some parts are ware and tare. Nothing is permanent. I am very happy to ride this car. Thank you very much Sri Ratan Tata sir for making this car. You can’t satisfy every one. But some people are very much happy.

      • Hey Arun!
Glad to know your Nano is working good. Talking about the article, we have curated the list of problems from our database where the customers have reported their problems

  3. The write up appears deeply prejudiced to me. My Nano is today 4.5 years old. Works like a song. No rattles or squeaks though Noida has its share of pot holes. Good AC, great power steering and a horn that goes with the size. :).

A pity marketing of the car suffered because of the teething problems. It deserved to be a grand success.

    • Hi Raj,
We are supremely happy that you and your Tata Nano are going strong with each other. The points listed in the article are sourced solely from our customer database. Indeed Tata Nano was indeed an amazing car that allowed even an average Indian to enjoy the convenience of a car. Thank You for reading. Happy Motoring! 🙂

  4. The subjective disparaging language makes it clear, the author is biased. Data needs to be presented as such, no need to add subjective colour that only serves to make the reviewer suspect….

    • Hey Saijee,

The author of this article loves the Tata Nano as much as you do. We never had the intention to deface Tata Motors or the Nano. The Nano is an epitome of innovation and technology and will always stay in our hearts for a great car it was 🙂

  5. I have been driving my TATA Nano for last about 80,000 km and I have never come across any of the problems detailed above. It is an amazing little car. This is a car, I wish, could have been allowed to stay in the Indian automobile market for a longer time.

  6. Tata nano is very good car, people should buy this car, yes i agree that some improvements has to do. Sure, Tata engineers will do, no one is perfect in world.
I and my family Love Tata nano. nano car never disappointed me in my all travels.

    • Hey there,
Absolutely not we are in no intention to defame Tata Motors or any of their offerings. The points listed both the articles are sourced from our customer database. Thank you for reading, Happy Motoring! 🙂

  7. You have not any little knowledge about TATA Nano, your post about NANO is totally wrong, I think you are a third class car mechanic service

    • Hey Jamiluddin,
The points listed in the article are from our customer feedback. Please be aware that in no way we are trying to de fame Tata Motors or Tata Nano. Thank You for reading. Happy Motoring! 🙂

  8. This post is misleading and ruining the image of the car. I have a Nano for past 10 years and did not replace any of the part like clutch, pwer windows neither faced any issues stated above. I am also member of a forum where 3000 Nano owners are there and all of them said that these issue does not exist as a common issue and depends on how you are driving the car and maintaining it. These issues are common issues for a Mercedes to a Maruti. Why are you highlighting this specifically for Tata Nano and ruining the image. This car is a wonder. Why dont you write a good post on how affordable the car is and build quality they proved after being in service for nearly 11years and still on like new. I feel it is due to these type of post an innovative product failed and a company lost his dream. Even a bike has more maintenance cost than a Nano.

    • Hey Avishek,
We are glad that you and your Nano are having a great time. The points listed in the article are sourced from our customer feedback. We at GoMechanic absolutely love the Tata Nano and what it stands for. The Nano enabled an average Indian to own and drive a car which was Sir Ratan Tata’s dream and in no way we trying to defame that. GoMechanic always for #VocalForLocal

  9. All nonsense. Don’t know from who provided you this details but before Posting you have to verify once. Join some nano owners group on social media then only you can understand performance of Tata Nano.

Please do some research before Posting such information.

  10. Please do not post fake articles for such a lovely car. Unfortunately you are spoiling your own reputation. Do some good research first and then blog.

    • Hey,
Our customer feedback is the sole source for the article. That said, Tata Nano was indeed a versatile vehicle that allowed even an average Indian to buy a vehicle. Thank You for reading. Happy Motoring! 🙂

  11. You are bull shitting Mr. Bharathwaj. Just to earn few bucks you greed has taken the evil route. I am using my Tata Nano for the last 8 years, I didn’t face any of this issues. Else I would have sold my car.
    Take down this post immediately.

    • Hi Santosh,
Glad to know that you and your Tata Nano are taking good care of each other. We assure you that non of our articles are or never will be paid to spread hatred or malice. Thank You for reading. Happy Motoring! 🙂

  12. I used Nano car appx 4 years. I never found any problem you mentioned. Yes it’s not comfortable like other car & less power. But according to price & engine capacity it’s not a bad choice. Some Improvement is required. It’s a good budget car.

  13. Well, well, well. I was about to use service of this firm for my next nano service but reading this article I can surely say these guys has no clue about the car. There are common problems in the car but above not the ones mentioned above.

If you say the AC is not adequate in Tata Nano then my friend you haven’t even seated in a Nano and making general judgements.

Atleast my nano is egoistic will not see the face of their service in it’s life.

  14. I am a proud owner of Nano Twist 2015. Never faced any problems mentioned in the article. In fact, AC is so powerful than any premium cars, power steering can be managed by finger tips, seat height ensure straight legs, accommodating 5 passengers like bigger ones easily, gave 27 km p h. The only two problems i faced are, suspension on poor road conditions, and other readings on speedo meter. I will keep it life long😀

  15. I have Nano XTA 2015 model. I have experienced horn problem after 3 year. I felt fog lamp front casing damage quickly. Sometimes in running it will be missed. Now a days I used to put additional adhesive fevi quick in the fog lamp case and now it is better.similarly mirror legs screen hiding caps. After 5 years now experience AMT malfunctioning issues. One time replaced the AMT motor. After 1000kms running again the issue reported and car is on service center. One of the Tata dealer service center demand 70K to fix the issue. So I given in a differentTata authorised service centre and they said they will replace AMT motor under warranty and still issue persist they will change TCU. TCU may cost 25K. Let’s wait and see.

  16. S.. I’m also TATA NANO GENX owned.. This author written very correct information.. all these happened in my car.. I agree with this forum’s conclusion..

  17. I have tata nano almost 10 years but its working good yes some problems are in it but its a part of maintenance we have to do, have to maintain it thats all its in every car after certain years of driving .

  18. If you have face any major problems after 5 years. It is better to change the complete unit like transmission or engine from where the total loss vechicle is scrapping. In Coimbatore ukkadam market. You will get cheep and best original parts from the vechicle is those met with accident and claimed for tottal loss.

  19. Hi Utkarsh Bhardwaj,

Your opinion is totally biased with Tata motors. How much you get paid for this? And you are saying this feedback comes from customer. Which customers you are talking about. Can you show me how many comments from above agree with you? We are the customer of Tata Nano and we know it very well. Take our feedback not your fake comments. We agree there is some improvement needed but as compared to price and features it’s a perfect car on land..so please keep your word back and take care. Hope in future you will be never biased with opinion.

    • Hi Mitesh,

Glad to know that you and your Tata Nano are taking good care of each other. We assure you that non of our articles are or never will be paid to spread hatred or malice. Thank You for reading. Happy Motoring! 🙂

  20. I live in Jamaica. A shortlived Tata dealership made me get a 2012 Nano. Drove it for 8 years with no issues and with no parts availability. A torn boot resulted in a damaged dricesdriv bearing. Having difficulty getting the part so I located and bought another Nano same year less kilometers. They’re a great car. Having located the part I’ll now have two wonderfully dependable little cars with no issues commonly found in cars generally. Good maintenance and good driving habits make for trouble free motoring even as far away as Jamaica.

  21. Hi ,

I guess the points what you have mentioned above holds good only for the models on or before 2012. But after that the later released Nano Cars were pretty good. My car is 7 years old and has run lakh kms and yes with regular maintenance it performs well.
I have had small issues here and then and nothing major. Fingers crossed!!
I guess if the Tata nano existed now, In 2020 and 2021 they would have had mored than 50k new customers. Most of middle class people opted for Used Cars as there was no New cars available in their budget of 2-3 lakhs. Wrong time exit for Tata Nano..Nano would have been the perfect lower middle class families with mileage of about 25 to 30kms at this hard time of petrol price hike.

  22. Dear Utkarsh,

I have Genx Tata Nano Car, for the last 4 years, have driven more than 20,000 km, which includes long drives too, surprising ly I never faced any of the problems with my Nano Car listed above!!! I think you need to drive this Car to understand it’s dynamics. People who drove this Car rather who own this car I do not think they would intentionally part with this automobile marvel. It’s a masterpiece creation from Tata Motors, which till date no other automobile companies had dared to compete in this category.

  23. I have a 2012 NANO. It has not given any problem till date. I service in authorized Tata service center every year. It’s a great car but TATA did not market it properly. The same is with other cars except Indica which sold heavily due to Taxi requirement.
Their advt is very poor, which brings in negativity to public mind, else the product is excellent.

  24. This is fake article. They only want to get more clicks on there articles so that they can earn money . I bought tata nano 2012 till now car is running very good condition. This gomechanic don’t know anything about cars. If people do there service regularly no problem will come in your car so don’t trust them

  25. 50, comments and not a single comment against nano, hey man what made you to publish such a 10pointed complaint list, rather I have been driving my Nano since last 11yrs happily and ofcourse proudly, without any single issue, would readily welcome Nano for its second innings, waiting Nano’s comeback

  26. I am a proud owner of tata nano cng car 2015 model since last 4years/56000km, which I purchased third hand. I hv not experienced any of the problems listed above.
On expressway, my car easily reaches 100speed, without any hiccups.
Mileage – city@20,highway@30-35, with AC ON.
I would again opt for nano if made again.
I really thank Ratan Tata, for this amazing car.
Tata nano failed, not because of quality issues, but plummetting sales because of bad publicity by competitors, who were really afraid of its competition.

  27. This article seems like a mere negative publicity campaign. None of the problems mentioned are true in my 2018 Nano XM CNG. I have managed 39km/kg on the highway. The AC chills quick. It’s brilliant in City traffic and parking is a breeze. Other cars may have more power but in a Nano I reach my destination quicker as one can squeeze through almost like bikes, but in the comfort of AC and less outside noise or pollution. I own two more luxury cars, but after getting used to the practicality and ease of ownership the Nano is my choice of daily commute. This car is built with a different purpose. So please cut the shoddy anti marketing out.

    • Hello Doctor!
First of all, thanks for commenting down your thoughts. Other than this, the article has been prepared from what GoMechanic’s customer base has been experiencing till now. These were the ‘most common’ problems but if none of them has occurred with you, you must be maintaining your machine really well!
Nano is a really good and practical car by the way. Can’t agree more to your words

  28. 5 problems with gomechanic..
    1. They hire people like this blogger who can defame a car.
    2. If they have got this top 10 list on their customer base, they really have a small customer base and don’t know the real problems.
    3. They don’t have qualified mechanics who know what the problem is.
    4. They can defame a car and a company without any hesitation. Nano is not a car for us, it is an emotion. But they don’t care about customer.
    5. They don’t even acknowledge the problem when 50 people are telling them. Let alone rectify it.

Would I give my car to gomechanic after seeing their incomplete knowledge and useless attitude? No.
Will I give them 1star rating on the playstore? Yes

You decide if u want to use gomechanic app.

  29. Hi , I have a problem with my 2017 Tata Nano AMT , Dealership is recommending for a AMT kit replacement which is close to 80 k . My car has run only 20k kms .

Can Tata motors help me . Amc gold plan ended last year
Posting this having confidence in Tata that they will give a solution .

  30. No not at all..why u are listed that problems..but i have been using 2009 model(150000km completed) i purchaged 2018 model twist xt..this also very nice.i used to go with 100km speed.i drived at a stretch 700km..per hour i will reach 75 km average speed..it s a very good car..i never faced the above problems..i dont know why u mentioned that 10 problems.from child hood i used ambassoder, fiat, maruthi esteem..above all these cars nano is good car..more comfortable driving experience..comfortable seating for long journeys..pl.stop this type of bad propakanda on nano car.

  31. Flogging a dead horse, thats what this writeup is about. Only a few badly run in Nanos have the complaints. Its a decent lower middle class car not the ones dreaming of SUVs ans sedans. No comparison, its a class by itself.

    • Hi Narayana!
I absolutely agree to what you wrote. Nano is indeed a great car but these problems have been collected from our workshop database. I hope you understand every machine gives you a problem one day no matter how great it might be! That’s exactly why GoMechanic is here. Happy to help! 🙂

  33. Tata Nano is the best car Every car big or small has some problems .Yet time will tell .I hope the Tata Nano EV comes soon vijay

  34. No 1 Small car, Government grant permission to TataNano insted if Auto Riksha.
It is very necessary for Transport Vehicle. In winter and Rainy season all of tired in Auto Riksha.
I am used Nano since 11 Years ago. Not given me a small problem I am Very Thankful to Ratan Tata.
No one can blame to Tata Nano 🚘 Car.

  35. टाटा नैनो एक परफेक्ट कार है काफी दूरी हमने तय की है पर पार्ट्स मिलने में काफी दिक्कत होती है यह तक कि शो रूम में भी इस समस्या का समाधान हो

  36. Hi
I have been using tata nano for 10 years and fully satisfied .It is a nice car me and my family fully satisfied .The persons who doesn’t drive the car they talk negatively. As it is a small car,one cannot compare with big cars.

  37. Being a Tata Nano family member, i was curious to know what the 10 common problems were. After going through the article i was relieved and happy that we did not encounter any one point in the past 12 years of ownership. I also happened to read your responses to each individual to your report and have to agree with the others that you just needed 10 excuses to prove that the Nano wasn’t good.
At the same time I much appreciate your cool responses to every reaction. Btw, the Tata dealers who service their cars still give all of us the same respect and love irrespective whether it is a Nano or any other model, at their dealerships when we go for a service or a issue.
Last but not the least leg room across any seat in the Nano is simply awesome. Wanted to sell this car but my son who is a scientist, just said NO. 🙂

  38. Well…. interesting article. Simply nitpicking. I own two not one 2012 Tata nano in Jamaica of all places. Now imagine having a car with no dealer and no parts after two years. No all wasn’t lost as the car didn’t break. Amazing fuel economy, crazy dependability and head turning shape. So your ten grouses never materialized even with no support. It was so good that I bought a second car that someone gave up due to no dealer. Still no problems. Change oil ,filters, and service brakes purrs like a kitten. Your responses were borderline offensive because your comments and grouses were at odds. I get my parts from Boodmo sent here by FedEx. Brake shoes and shocks. Long live Nano

    • Hello Lloyd,
Glad to know your Nano is working well. Talking about the article, we have curated the list of problems from our database where the customers have reported their problems. Stay Pinned! 🙂
