Legendary Ambassador Making A Comeback? Details Here!

We all remember the legendary Ambassador from Hindustan Motors, which was one of the most iconic & classic cars to be around. It used to be the only mass-produced luxury car in the market and offered exceptional comfort; we cant wait to see it running on the roads again. Now it is set to come back in a new avatar; we will have the old legend resurrected in a few years. Let’s see what we know about the Ambassador’s resurrection so far:

Ambassador set to come back

HM Ambassador

It was on the roads for a long time of 56 years, and it was the initial status symbol car at that time. All notable celebrities and politicians owned this aspirational product. It was based on the 1956 Morris Oxford III series with some India specific changes. From politicians to families, this car put exponential people on wheels.

With time it received minor upgrades but could not compete with the competition in 2014 and was discontinued. But now the reports suggest it is said to come back and will be manufactured at Hindustan Motor’s plant in Chennai. Uttam Bose, Director, Hindustan Motors, also said that the “Mechanical design work for the new engine has reached an advanced stage,” and they are working on the new Amby.

PSA Acquired Ambassador

Three years later, it was discontinued. Groupe PSA (Peugeot & Citroen) acquired the brand for ₹80 crores in 2017. Citroen also entered the Indian market in recent years with the C5 Aircross, and the C3 was also spied testing, which might be coming in June. This deal struck hope for the Ambassador to return to India.

While we also got another hint from Stellantis itself in 2019, Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, gave a little clue on the Ambassador having the potential to return:
“For us, Ambassador is an asset, of course. We understand what it represents in this country in terms of status, comfort and reliability. We are too young in this market to be able to have a clear cut opinion about how we should use it. So, what we have decided is to keep it in our hands and try to understand the market better while at the same time look for better opportunities for aligning it with the Citroen brand. It could very much bridge the past with the future.”

While we dont have the exact details and technical specifications of the resurrected Ambassador, it might enter the Indian market by 2024. It will be a collaboration between HMFCI: Hind Motor Financial Corporation of India and the French carmaker Peugeot and they are already working on the resurrection.

We can expect a new design loaded with modern age technology and safety features and some quirky features like other french cars. This is a car that every Indian desired at that time, and its comeback will excite the whole nation.
