The Indian market sees a new car almost every alternate week. But have you noticed, there has been a quick shift in what the audience prefers? Ok, let’s simplify it for you. Let’s go to the previous decade and have a look at the market scenario. You could easily get a sedan if you had 10 Lakhs in your pocket right? But if you consider today’s market scenario, you will not spot any sedan in the market in the given price range. What we easily get under 10 lakhs is a completely new segment known as the subcompact SUV segment!
In today’s featured, we are going to have a look at how subcompact SUVs took over sedans in the Indian market. Which one would you choose among these two?

The SUV Era!
This is where it started! Ford Ecosport can be addressed as the trendsetter. Although India got the Ford Fusion before the EcoSport arrived, this American subcompact SUV changed the whole scenario of the Indian market. You could get that ‘SUV’ feel in a price which was extremely affordable for you! We don’t think the Indian audience needed something else and this paradigm shift of the Indian car buyer’s mindset really left the carmakers to work towards a new future.

High Ground Clearance (The obvious advantage)
When you say SUV, you know by default that it will have more ground clearance than a sedan for sure! Considering the potholes we have in almost all the cities of India and some speed breakers where you really have to give a second thought before moving your sedan over them. If you own a subcompact SUV, you no longer have to worry about the road conditions and you can drive the way you like.
-
Rugged Stance
SUVs give you a more rugged feel. If you are the one who likes called being rugged and tough and don’t have a budget to buy a full-sized SUV, you would surely go for a subcompact SUV over a sedan/compact sedan. As we mentioned earlier, the sub-compact SUVs, just like full-sized SUVs give a rugged stance and sporty look which can be considered as an added advantage if you are an SUV lover!

More Value For Money
The subcompact SUVs prove to be more value for money. No, we are not saying that sedans don’t deliver value for the price they come at but they can be more value for money because they can give you better room inside the cabin and better specs under the hood for a price similar to a sedan. Considering SUVs are more comfortable in terms of entering and leaving the cabin and are better in terms of drivability as well.

Similar (or better) specs
If you are going for a subcompact SUV, then you can expect it to have specs similar to that of a sedan. Just imagine, if there is the same engine under the hood of a sedan and a subcompact SUV, you can still get a more sporty feel from the subcompact SUV. Also, the handling and driveability are better with SUVs than sedans even with the same engine and transmission.
-
More Comfort
If you consider the suspension of a subcompact SUV, it will be softer than a sedan, Yes, travelling in an SUV is more comfortable than a sedan. A sedan might look more executive but considering the Indian roads, you need a good suspension and subcompact SUVs are definitely a bang for your buck!
-
Better Road Presence
Rugged stance, sporty finish or whatever you may call it, the subcompact SUVs give you a better road presence in comparison to the compact sedans. The sedans have their own set of audience but considering SUVs, you definitely get a better presence on the road and you can definitely make it felt.

Commanding View
When you are inside, you will get the ‘SUV’ feel too. You get a better commanding view on the inside when you are driving an SUV and you can see the road better and therefore, can drive better too!
Except if you sit in a Maruti Brezza. It feels like you in a modified alto and on top of that the price higher than XUV 300, Venue, Magnite(of course).
I Personally don’t like these sub compact SUV’s ,, They are just beefed up versions of Premium hatchbacks and some in the market have a horrible body role in comparison to a hatchback.
