The Mahindra Scorpio N is just around the corner! What a day Mahindra has chosen to launch the Scorpio N, the 20th birthday of the OG Scorpio! The Scorpio has been a legendary car in India. For 20 years, it has been giving us the confidence to take on bad roads like they’re nothing. Today, let’s look at the Mahindra Scorpio through the ages.
When it all began
Back in 2002, Mahindra introduced the Scorpio, the big rugged SUV that keeps you comfortable on all kinds of roads. The SUV came with a chunky 2.6L diesel engine that made 116HP and about 200nm of torque. Back then, features weren’t the biggest thing in the car. However, the Scorpio got all the basics, AC, powered windows, and a stereo system. This was just the beginning of the 20 years of fan-following that the Scorpio was about to gather!
The 2006 update of the Mahindra Scorpio
4 years after its launch, the Scorpio received a major update. The engine was retuned, and it now made more power and torque. It got the signature hood-scoop, which was very functional. It also got 2 airbags, steering mounted controls, a MID, and other new features. This was the first time Mahindra offered an automatic transmission alongside the 5-speed manual.
The 2009 facelift
This was more of a cosmetic update. The lights, colours and some design elements were revamped. Mahindra put in efforts to make the Scorpio look more modern and up to date. This was when the Scorpio fanbase was increasing rapidly and Mahindra decided to swoop in a fresh update. The Scorpio also got new alloys with this update.
The 2014 Mahindra Scorpio
In 2014, Mahindra came out with the legendary 2.2L mHawk diesel engine that is still doing suits on the XUV700 and the Thar, and will possibly continue on the new Scorpio N. Mahindra also made changes to the ladder-on-frame chassis for this update. Here, the Scorpio also got new features like automatic climate control, automatic wipers and headlamps, and a touchscreen infotainment unit.
The final update – 2017
This update made the Scorpio look meaner and more aggressive. It was also a major update for the engine, The re-tuned mHawk now produced 140HP and 320nm torque. Moreover, the Scorpio also got a 6th gear in 2017, making it more highway-friendly!
Bonus – The Mahindra Scorpio Getaway
For those who wanted more storage space and a taste of a pick-up truck, Mahindra launched the Scorpio Getaway. It didn’t do too well in India but is still in demand in foreign markets. It gets the same engine that the OG Scorpio gets, and is essentially the same on the inside as well.
The 2022 Mahindra Scorpio N
Fast forward to 2022, Mahindra is all set to reveal the Scorpio N. This will be a more powerful, luxurious and good-looking version of the Scorpio. The original Scorpio will still remain on sale alongside the Scorpio N!
