Jimny has been running globally for about 50 years, and now Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch it in India. It was shown off in the 2020 Auto-Expo at Greater Noida. Currently, it is sold across 194 countries and could be in India by the following year.
Kenichi Ayukawa, CEO & MD, revealed the vehicle at the 2020 Auto-Expo to evaluate the response & reactions to develop a marketing strategy for the launch. He further said:
“Jimny has been developed on the basis of thorough research, assessing the expectations and requirements of professional users.”

The compact design with a punchy engine says a lot about the offroading capabilities of the car. The segment only has Thar & Gurkha to choose from, but it will be great to have another competitor. Let’s see what we might see in the upcoming Jimny:
-
Engine options
Jimny will run with the same 1.5L K15B engine making 102hp & 130Nm torque to tackle rugged terrains. It will be mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed AMT. Four-wheel drive will be standard as it is an offroader.

The engine might also get the start/stop feature. No significant changes are expected in the machine except for increased torque.

Design & Dimensions
The official dimensions have not been revealed yet, but we can expect the following dimensions(mm):
Length 3850 Width 1645 Height 1730 Wheelbase 2550 It has a boxy SUV appeal with a partially aggressive front. The compact build with a powerful engine will help Jimny tackle difficult terrains & narrow roads too. 16-inch alloys are expected to be on offer with a new design.
We expect the 3-door variant to launch by 2022, and the 5-door longer wheelbase version might also hit the market. Again there is no official word about it, but a 5-door version will be pretty more practical.

Features
We can expect a smart play infotainment system with connected tech. The interior has not been spied yet, but it might be similar to the upcoming update of Brezza/S-Cross. The feature list will be pretty identical too, but Jimny might miss on a few premium tweaks.

Pricing & Launch Timeline
There is no official pricing or launch timeline declared yet, but the expected price can be between ₹10-14 lakhs (ex-showroom). A more affordable version known as ‘Jimny Lite’ has also been on sale in countries such as Australia, and it misses out on some features such as alloy wheels & smart connect.
Another official from the top positions stated the following in February:
“We are currently evaluating whether the feasibility of it being launched in the domestic market. As you may recall, we had shown this Jimny at the Auto Expo in February 2020, and we got some really nice responses. And we are currently studying the various aspects of the marketing as to when, if at all, we can launch that vehicle in India.”
