10 Ways To Stay Safe In A CNG Car!

CNG-powered cars have been gaining popularity amongst private owners. While India relentlessly prepares itself for the EV boom, CNG is surely a good bridge to that road. With so many people entering the CNG space, there are some things you should keep in mind. Here are 10 ways to stay safe in a CNG car!

  1. Refill only 2/3rds of your tank during summers

This point is the most important one during this time. As temperatures have been rising and there have been multiple heatwaves across the country, one must only fill 2/3rd of their CNG tanks. The reason behind this is that high temperatures result in a higher pressure inside the tank, and if it is already full to the brim, there’ll be no space to make room for all this extra pressure. Thus, this is one of the key ways to stay safe with a CNG tank in summer.A CNG-Powered Honda City

  2. NO UNAUTHORIZED CNG KITS

India is full of jugaads, the mechanic at the corner of your street can easily convert your petrol car to a CNG car. However, can be extremely dangerous. Unauthorized kits can and will mess with the wiring and the mechanics of your car. And in the worst case, this can cause severe fires. Therefore, it is highly advised that one should go for a factory-fitted CNG kit, or a manufacturer authorized kit only. It is one of the most basic ways to stay safe in a CNG car.

  3. Don’t cheap out on the accessories

At times, we might fall into the traps of something cheaper doing the same job, but don’t. A mismatched cylinder or a mismatching fuel kit can surely run your car. The fluctuating voltages can easily start a file in a fraction of a second. So, always go for brand-recognized accessories for your CNG kit.

  4. Get CNG compatible Spark Plugs

It is true that spark plugs tend to wear out much faster on a CNG-operated car. It is necessary that you install CNG compatible spark plugs in your car while making the switch to CNG. Our talented folks at GoMechanic would be more than happy to help you out with the same. In the rare case that GoMechanic doesn’t have CNG compatible spark plugs, we’d be happy to reduce that gap between the source of the spark and the metallic tip to make do until our stocks are restored (which won’t be long!).CNG Certificate Validity Extended Due To Pandemic

  5. Drive on petrol before switching to CNG

When you start your car, make sure you always do it on Petrol and not on CNG. Moreover, you should drive your car on petrol for at least 1 kilometer to make sure all the parts of the engine are well lubricated. This will reduce wear and tear and it’ll help you avoid unnecessary bills!

  6. Get your car checked regularly

One of the most basic ways to stay safe in a CNG car, or any car for that matter! Roll over to any GoMechanic workshop and get your CNG car checked every couple of months. You need to make sure that there’s no leakage in your CNG cylinder. You also need to make sure that all the wiring is intact and not worn out. These are the 2 most important things to keep in mind to avoid fires.

  7. Maintain the Cylinder Pressure

The pressure should not be more than 200 bars at any given time. This is the safe limit that will avoid any kinds of leakages. The pressure can easily be monitored on the gauge fitted at the gas filling machine.

  8. Replace the CNG Filter

One must replace the CNG filter after every 20000KMS. Using an overused filter will result in a clogged filter. This in turn will result in a significant loss of power and acceleration. No need to worry, any GoMechanic service station can help you with this in a jiffy!

  9. No Smoking inside the car

One of the best ways to stay safe in a CNG car; and in life! Well, no smoking in general, but if you choose to do so, don’t do it in your car! Smoking inside a car that has a gas-filled tank in the trunk at the back is not a good idea at any given time. It can cause fatal accidents and we surely don’t want that.

  10. Keep the Throttle Body clean

The Throttle Body is the valve that connects the air filter and the intake manifold. Try to keep this as clean as possible to enjoy maximum acceleration from your CNG car. Since CNG cars generally lack acceleration in general, you definitely don’t want it to be any slower!
