carmakers & engines-ft

Fuel efficiency figures or car mileage is what almost every second person is after. Well, this is something that can dig a deep hole in our pockets after so many prices hikes. As of now in the market, they are the diesel engines that are the most fuel-efficient ones. That said, not everyone goes for these engines. So, if you are willing to buy a new car or want to gain a little knowledge of the carmakers and their most fuel-efficient engines. So, in no particular order let’s begin!

NOTE: All the fuel efficiency figures are ARAI values.

  1. Maruti Suzuki

    2020 Maruti Suzuki Dzire
After the implementation of the BS6 emission norms, Maruti Suzuki discontinued their legendary 1.3-litre DDiS turbo diesel engine. That makes this carmaker one of the few to miss out on diesel altogether in their portfolio.

    • Petrol Engine – 1.2-litre K12N (23.76kmpl – 24.12kmpl)
New Maruti Suzuk Swift DualJet Engine

The fuel efficiency figures do not really exclaim that it is a petrol engine. Well, if you own a car that runs on petrol, it’s hard to extract the ARAI claimed mileage. But stalking about this engine, it surely gives similar fuel economy.

This engine also comes with a hybrid powertrain (SHVS) that aids the motor and releases some load off it. Meaning the engine will consume less fuel. Cars like Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Swift and more come with this engine.

  2. Tata

    2020 Tata Tiago 2020

Tata is that Indian carmaker that manufactures some of India’s safest cars. But that said, they are a little lacking on the engine front. Thankfully though, Tata still continues to offer diesel engines with some of its vehicles.

    • Petrol Engine – Tata 1.2-Litre Revotron Engine (20kmpl – 24kmpl)
Revtron 1.2T with Multi Drive Modes

Tata does make well-engineered cars, but the department where they need a little improvement is the powertrain. Talking about this motor, this 1.2-litre engine does duties in the Tiago, Tigor and Altroz. When comparing this engine with some of its competition it is a little up on power.

But being a 3 cylinder engine the NVH levels are a lot high. This 1.2-litre 3 cylinder engine produces 84hp of peak power and 113Nm of maximum torque. Also, the mileage ranges from 20-24kmpl with the maximum coming from Tiago with AMT gearbox.

    • Diesel Engine – Tata 1.5-Litre Revotorq (25kmpl – 26kmpl)
      Revotorq Engine

When it comes to the engine, it is the diesel that Tata is better of with. Here in India Tata offer only one engine that does duties in the Tata Altroz and Nexon. Well, if you’d say Harrier’s 2.0-litre engine, it has been developed by FCA Group (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). This engine generates 90hp of max power and the peak torque output sits at 200Nm.

  3. Hyundai

    Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

The Korean carmaker has been a chief part of the Indian automobile industry. That said, now they have established firm grounds here. This was possible because of the well-rounded package that the company offers. This also includes the powertrain.

    • Petrol Engine – 1.2-litre Kappa (20kmpl -21kmpl)
Hyundai Aura 1.2 Kappa Petrol Engine

Fuel efficiency in Hyundai’s petrol-powered cars does not exactly flock together. Speaking of the engines, they surely are refined and also produce decent power figures, but they don’t have good figures of kilometres per litre.

But still, among many petrol engines, this is the most fuel-efficient of the lot. This motor is a part of the Grand i10 Nios, i20, Venue and more. This 4 cylinder engine is healthy enough to generate 82hp of max power and 114Nm of maximum torque.

    • Diesel engine – 1.2-litre U2 CRDi (25kmpl – 26kmpl)
      Hyundai BS6 Diesel Engines

There are brands that offer better diesel engines than petrol. And Hyundai is among the top contenders on the list. This Korean auto giant is famous for its CRDi technology in its diesel engines. Additionally, this technology has been there in its diesel engine for more than a decade now.

These well-engineered engines are capable of delivering mileage figures of about 25-26kmpl, depending upon how you drive. And the most efficient of the lot is the 1.2-litre 3 cylinder U2 CRDi engine. This motor comes under the hood of the Grand i10 Nios and Aura.

  4. Toyota

Toyota Yaris | BS6 Cars From Toyota

The second Japanese carmaker to ditch the diesel powertrain in its entry-level cars is Toyota. Forget ditching the diesel engines, as per some reports Toyota might ditch its c-segment sedan Yaris too. Later to be replaced with the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz based Belta. Keeping that aside, let’s see what does Toyota has on offer.

    • Petrol Engine: 1.5-litre VVT-i (16kmpl – 17kmpl)
      Toyota Yaris Engine

To being with we are not considering the engine from the Glanza or Brezza as they are also shared by their other counterpart. Now moving on to the true Toyota’s engine 1.5-litre VVT- motor. In one word, this engine is smooth and super refined. Also, it is adequately powerful.

But one thing is that this engine is shy of telling its fuel efficiency. Talking about the numbers, this motor returns about 16kmpl -17 kmpl, that too on a good day. Moreover, this engine generates 106hp of maximum power and the peak output is about 140Nm. This engine only comes with the Toyota Yaris.

    • Diesel Engine – 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV (11 kmpl – 13 kmpl)
Toyota Innova Touring Sport | Engine

Looking at the engine capacity and its code name, you might not recognise this engine. So, let me tell you, this is the very same engine that debuted in India’s famous people’s mover, the Innova. Over the years, the engine has been updated regularly with the latest one being last year.

This is where this 2.4-motor was updated to follow the stricter BS6 emission norms. This engine though being a diesel returns a mileage of about 11-13kmpl. Also, considering its size the engine is a little low on power. This motor generates 148hp of max power the 343Nm of peak torque.

  5. Jeep

    2021 Jeep Compass Facelift Launched

The American car brand is renowned for its vehicle’s exceptional off-road capabilities. Well, keeping that in mind, one of the important things to have in these tough driving conditions is a reliable and potent engine. Also, without much compromise on fuel economy (for India). So, here in our country Jeep has petrol and a diesel engine.

    • Petrol Engine – 1.4 L MultiAir (13kmpl – 14kmpl)
      Jeep Compass Engine

1.4-litres 4 cylinder petrol engine, sounds weak? Well, think again. This is a 1.4-litre motor that is turbocharged. Meaning, it produces a jaw-dropping power of about 163hp and 260Nm of maximum torque. Out on the road, this motor seamlessly powers the newly updated Jeep Compass.

Trust me, sitting behind the wheel of this compact SUV is a delight. Now moving on to the other aspect, the mileage. On a good day or if driven well, this engine can return mileage anywhere from 13kmpl to 14kmpl.

  6. Honda

    All New Update Honda Jazz

The Japanese brand Honda was earlier known for just the petrol engine in India. And it was expected that Honda might discontinue the diesel engine after the implementation of the BS6 emission norms. But the expectations are always deceiving. And Honda still offers diesel engine with a couple of its cars along with the obvious petrol.

    • Petrol Engine – 1.2-Litre i-VTEC (17kmpl – 18kmpl)
      Honda Jazz petrol engine

It’s a no brainer that among a couple of engines the one that is lower in capacity produces better mileage. This motor does duties in cars like Honda Jazz, Honda Amaze and more.

The motor under the hood is capable of giving mileage of about 17-18kmpl. Provided, the driver drives the car with care. Also, having the i-VTEC feature it does get an advanced engine that produces 89bhp of power and 110Nm of peak torque.

    • Diesel Engine – 1.5-litre i-DTEC (24kmpl – 25kmpl)
      Honda’s i-DTEC Diesel Engine

The rising demand for diesel engine pushed Honda to introduce this engine in India. And it was Honda Amaze that was the flag bearer of this engine. Though the NVH levels are not class-leading.

What is, is the fuel efficiency. This engine is capable of returning mileage upwards of 24kmpl. Not to forget, this is a torquey engine. Speaking of which, the motor generated peak power of 99hp and maximum torque of 200Nm.

  7. Skoda

    skoda rapid

Next on the list to ditch the diesel engine for the BS6 era of vehicles was Skoda. And we are pretty sure they’ll not be switching back to a diesel powertrain. So, as of now in the country, Skoda has 3 turbo petrol engines that power its vehicle.

    • Petrol Engine – 1.0-litre TSI (18kmpl – 19kmpl)
Skoda Rapid vs Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Engine Comparison

Skoda Rapid was the first car in the country that got the 1.0-litre TSI motor. In addition to that, the pricing of the vehicle was just spot on. But we’d say don’t just go by its size.

This small engine generates 109hp of max power and 175Nm of peak torque. Additionally, this can propel the Rapid from 0-100 in under 10 seconds. Now coming to the real deal, the 1.-litre TSI engine returns a good mileage of about 18-19kmpl.

  8. Ford

    Ford Figo

The American carmaker that never gave up on the Indian market in Ford. They have robust and fun to drive cars in their lineup. Ford also still offers diesel engine with its vehicle. Currently, Ford has a couple of petrol engines and diesel engines. And the most efficient of them are:

    • Petrol Engine – 1.2-litre Ti-VCT (18-19kmpl)
      Ford Figo petrol engine

One of our personal favourite engines is the one from Ford. Well, judging the engine by its capacity does not do justice. This 1.2-litre engine from the American carmaker is good enough to produce a peak power of 95hp and maximum torque of 119Nm. Not just that, despite a higher power output, the engine can return fuel economy of nearly 18-19kmpl (depending upon how you drive).

    • Diesel Engine – Ford 1.5-Litre TDCi (24kmpl – 25kmpl)
      Ford Figo diesel engine

Another carmaker to have a 1.5-litre diesel engine is Ford. The Ford uses this engine in Figo, Aspire and Ecosport. Moving on, the company likes to call it the TDCi engine. In addition to that, despite the increase in price because of the BS6 transaction, Ford did not discontinue the Diesel engine like many other carmakers.

Talking about the technical specs, this engine produces max power of 100hp with a peak torque of 215Nm. Depending on the car in which this engine resides, you can get mileage anywhere from 24kmpl to 25kmpl.

  9. Renault

Renault Kwid Neotech Edition | fuel efficient engines

Adding to the no diesel list is Renault. Just like many other carmakers in India, Renault too pulled the plug on its diesel engines. There were many vehicles in the company’s portfolio that used to offer a diesel engine. But if something goes out a better option comes in.

    • 800cc BR08DE Engine (21kmpl – 22kmpl)
2020 Renault Kwid Engine | fuel efficient engines
